![]() Clemson Moves Into Semifinals With 2-1 Win Over Boston College
Nov. 1, 2006 CARY, N.C. - Clemson extended its unbeaten to six straight matches in 2006 with a 2-1 win over Boston College in the quarterfinals of the ACC Women's Soccer Tournament. The Tigers scored the game-winner in the 87th minute avenging an earlier loss in the regular season to the Eagles back on September 24 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Meghan Smith and Julie Bolt registered the Tiger goals, while BC's Brianna Wilson-Byrne scored the lone goal for the Eagles. Clemson took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Bolt, her fourth of the season. Fraser Gerth assisted on the play as the sophomore forward found Bolt sprinting down the sideline. Bolt beat the BC defense and found the back of the net for the one-goal advantage. The Eagles' tied the match at one scoring their first goal in ACC Tournament history at 67:51 of the second half. Sophomore forward Brianna Wilson-Byrne registered her fourth goal of the season off a pass from ACC Freshman of the Year Gina DiMartino. DiMartino collected the loose ball along the Tiger end line and fed the ball on goal where Wilson-Byrne deposited the ball into the back of the net. With just under four minutes remaining in the match, the Tigers would score the game-winner off the leg of Meghan Smith. It was Smith's fifth goal of the season. Molly Franklin was credited with the assist as she flicked a header to Smith who one-timed the shot for a 2-1 lead. Clemson's Ashley Phillips and Boston College's Sarah Buonomo each posted two saves in net. The Eagles out shot the Tigers 15-5, while maintaining a 6-3 corner kick advantage. The win moves Clemson to 11-6-2 on the season and into the semifinals where they will face top-seeded North Carolina on Friday, November 4 at 5:00 pm.
