North Carolina Downs NC State in Opening Round of ACC Women's Soccer Tournament

CARY, N.C. - The North Carolina Tar Heels registered goals from a pair of freshmen as the Tar Heels opened the 19th ACC Women's Soccer Tournament with a 3-0 win over NC State at the SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C. Whitney Engen tallied a pair of goals and Ali Hawkins added another, while Casey Nogueira collected two assists as North Carolina moved to 13-0-0 in opening round action of the ACC Tournament.
North Carolina closed out the first half with a pair of goals in the final ten minutes off a pair of corner kick headers by freshman Whitney Engen. Engen gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead as she placed her header shot into the lower left corner of the net. Freshman Casey Nogueira was credited with the assist. The duo would connect again off another corner kick with just six seconds remaining in the half. Nogueira sent the corner kick to the far post where Engen headed the ball into the right side of the netting for a 2-0 halftime lead.
NC State had a scoring chance in the 73rd minute as Lindsey Vera's shot was blocked by the Tar Heel defense out of bounds. The ensuring corner by the Wolfpack was cleared out of the zone.
The Tar Heels would add to their lead in the 86th minute off a throw-in by Tobin Heath. Senior Elizabeth Guess gathered the throw-in and sent a cross into the box to Hawkins who scored the third North Carolina goal of the afternoon. The goal by Hawkins was her fourth of the season. The assist by Guess was her team-leading 11th in 2006 and fifth all-time in ACC Tournament history.
The Wolfpack's Megan Connors made 12 saves in net, while Anna Rodenbough had a pair of stops for the Tar Heels.
The win moves North Carolina to 19-1-0 on the season and into the semifinals where they will face the winner of the Boston College/Clemson match-up on Friday, November 4 at 5:00 pm. With the loss, NC State falls to 9-9-2 on the season.
