Heels Blast Baylor to Win Duke/adidas Women's Soccer Classic
September 27, 1998 DURHAM, N.C. - Laurie Schwoy and Tournament MVP Cindy Parlow scored two goals apiece as the top-ranked Tar Heels defeated Baylor 5-0 to win the Duke/adidas Womens Soccer Classic on Sunday. Senior Rakel Karvelsson also added a goal and two assists while Rebekah McDowell was credited with three assists. Meredith Florance and Lorrie Fair also contributed assists. Parlow, a senior scored the only goals in the first half, at the 18:29 and 31:43 marks. The Tar Heels then added three goals in the second half, with Schwoy scoring in the 69th and 74th minute, and Karvelsson connecting in the 77th minute. North Carolina (8-0) won the tournament with two shutouts -- over Baylor on Sunday and a 6-0 win over San Francisco on Friday night. Parlow earned Tournament MVP honors after scoring three goals during the weekend, while teammates McDowell, Schwoy and Lindsay Stoecker were named to the All-Tournament team. Baylors selections to the All-Tournament team included forward Courtney Saunders, goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse and defender Meghan Crona. The Bears record now stands at 6-3 overall. Duke opened the scoring in the 12th minute of the match, as Kasey Truman scored a goal, assisted by Kristy Whelchel nd Kester. The Lady Dons responded in the 27:47 mark, as a Mollie Hautau shot from Shawni Flint hit the net. Feeney broke the tie just before halftime with a goal in the 43rd minute, assisted by Liz Speights. The only scoring in the second half was a Kester goal in the 58th minute, assisted by Feeney. Duke, who evened its record to 5-5 overall, finished the tournament with a 1-1 record after losing to Baylor on Friday night. The Blue Devils had two picks to the Classic All-Tournament team -- Truman and Whelchel. Goalkeeper Amy Voiland and forward Kishandee Green were San Franciscos All-Tournament selections.
