BOULDER, Colo. - The heroes were aplenty for the #1-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team Sunday afternoon as the two-time defending NCAA champion Tar Heels defeated Colorado College 9-0 at the Pleasant View Soccer Soccer Complex at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo.

A crowd of 500 fans saw the Tar Heels improve to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Tigers fell to 2-1-0. Carolina has now won 23 successive matches over the past two seasons and it has a 47-match unbeaten streak over the past three years.

Carolina senior forward Rakel Karvelsson got only her fifth career start and made the most of the opportunity, recording a hat trick in the first 54:10 of the match. Senior forward Cindy Parlow, who scored the game-winning goal in Friday night's victory over Colorado, added two goals and one assist. Junior midfielder Rebekah McDowell, playing near her hometown of Lakewood, Colo., had two first-half goals for UNC. Other goal scorers were sophomore forward Meredith Florance and freshman defender, chalking up her first career goal.

Sophomore forward Raven McDonald added two assists to give her three in two games in Colorado, while freshman midfielder Jena Kluegel, who scored who first career goal Friday night versus the Golden Buffaloes, added two assists. Borgman also had an assist as did junior defender Lorrie Fair and junior reserve defender Charlotte Mitchell.

Carolina outshot the Tigers 31-4. Senior Siri Mullinix and freshman Kristin DePlatchett shared the shutout effort in goal for UNC as each played 45 minutes and each made one save.

The Tar Heels will now prepare to host the nation's best regular-season tournament next weekend in Chapel Hill--the Nike/Carolina Classic. On Friday at UNC's Fetzer Field, #2 Notre Dame will play #10 Duke at 5 p.m. followed by #1 North Carolina vs. #9 Hartford at 7 p.m. On Sunday, September 13, #10 Duke will play against #9 Hartford at 12:30 p.m., while #1 UNC and #2 Notre Dame will tangle at 2:30 p.m. in what promises to be an outstanding battle.
