![]() No. 21 Wake Forest Women's Soccer Cruises Past Syracuse, 4-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Four different Wake Forest women' s soccer players scored, as the No. 21 Demon Deacons cruised past Syracuse, 4-0, Friday evening in Spry Stadium. The win marks head coach Tony da Luz's 150th career victory and improves the Demon Deacons to 2-1 on the season. Sophomore Amy Smerdzinski and freshman Jill Hutchinson earned goals in the first half of the match, while Allie Sadow and Megan Upchurch scored in the second stanza. On the night, the Demon Deacon offense shined, outshooting the Orange, 26-4. The Deacs immediately took control of the game and created multiple chances to score in the first 15 minutes. Sadow had two back-to-back opportunities 10 minutes into the game, beating her defenders and having the shots saved by the Orange goalkeeper. A foul inside the box in the 29th minute created a penalty kick for Wake Forest. Taking the free shot, Smerdzinski gave the Deacs a 1-0 advantage. The Demon Deacons kept the momentum going as Hutchinson defeated her defender and opened up the perfect scoring opportunity three minutes after the penalty shot. Placing the ball perfectly into the corner, Hutchinson put the Deacs by two going into the break. Wake Forest had no trouble holding onto the edge through the second half, taking three shots right off the kickoff. Sadow, who led the Deacs with seven shots on the night, connected in the 63rd minute off a cross from senior Jayme Leigh Carnongi . Upchurch closed out the Wake Forest scoring with nine minutes remaining as she received a cross from Maggie Horne at the 18-yard line.
The Demon Deacons earned nine corner kicks to Syracuse's three. Candice Hofmann played the entire game in goal for Syracuse and registered 11 saves. Wake Forest will return to the field on Sunday, as the Demon Deacons host Wyoming. Kickoff at Spry Stadium at 1 p.m. |
