Terps Go To 2-0 With 2-1 Win at Fordham

BRONX, N.Y. - Sophomore Jasmyne Spencer scored two goals to lift the University of Maryland women's soccer team to a 2-0 start to the 2009 season with a 2-1 victory at Fordham Sunday afternoon.

The 2-0 start is the first time the Terps have begun a season with back-to-back wins since 2002 when Maryland defeated Towson and Duke.

The Terrapin defense was solid throughout the match, allowing just six Fordham shots overall. But after Spencer gave Maryland the lead back, the Terps' defense allowed only one shot by the Rams, which was easily stopped by senior goalkeeper Mary Casey, who made the four stops on the afternoon.

No. 14 Duke Blanks Gardner-Webb to Open the Season

DURHAM, N.C. - The 14th-ranked Duke women's soccer team opened the 2009 slate on Sunday evening at Koskinen Stadium with a 3-0 blanking of Gardner-Webb. The Blue Devils moved to 1-0 on the season, while the Bulldogs fell to 2-0.

With the victory, Duke Head Coach Robbie Church improved to 9-0 all-time in home openers at Koskinen Stadium.

For the game, Duke held a 36-4 shot advantage. Sophomore Emily Nahas came in to start the second half in goal for the Blue Devils and did not face a shot. Redmond led Duke with eight shots, while junior Kendall Bradley added four and junior Rebecca Allen added four shots as well.

Tech downs High Point in women's soccer home opener, 2-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech's women's soccer team opened its season with a win at home as they defeated the High Point Panthers 2-0 on Thompson Field. Tech's goals were scored by freshman Kelly Conheeney and senior captain Emily Jukich.

The Hokie defense battled the Panthers the whole game, not allowing even a shot until High Point's Laura Shupe fired two shots from more than 18 yards out in the 89th minute of the match. The Panthers are now 0-2 on the season after falling to Wake Forest earlier in the weekend.

The Hokies kept the ball in High Point's end of the field for the entire first half, allowing junior goalkeeper Rebekah Brook just a few touches of the ball. Brook recorded a shutout in her first game as a Hokie while Abbott made seven saves on the night.

Wake Forest Rallies for 2-1 Victory at UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest rallied from an early one-goal deficit to defeat UNC Greensboro 2-1 on Sunday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Demon Deacons improved to 2-0 on the season, while UNC Greensboro fell to 0-1 on the year.

UNC Greensboro controlled the early portion of the game and was able to grab the early lead just five minutes into the contest. Wake Forest was able to gain control halfway through the opening 45 minutes. The Deacs equalized in the 43rd minute and took the lead for good in the 58th minute.

Wake Forest outshot UNC Greensboro 19-7, including a 9-2 edge in the second half. The Deacs had seven shots on goal, compared to three for the Spartans. Junior goalkeeper Laura Morse picked up her second win of the season, making two saves and allowing a goal. Kelsey Kearney suffered the loss for UNCG, making five saves and giving up two goals.
