Terps Women's Soccer Blows Out George Mason In Season Opener, 5-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman forward Lydia Hastings scored a pair of goals for the University of Maryland women's soccer team in the Terps' 5-0 rout of George Mason Saturday evening at Ludwig Field.

It didn't take Hastings long to make her presence felt as the Rehoboth Beach, Del., native nearly got the Terps off to a fast start with a hard shot at the 2:10 mark that beat Patriot goalkeeper Melissa Mailley, but struck the right post.

Hastings wouldn't be denied in the 21st minute when she cleaned up a loose ball in front on the net for her first collegiate score. Sophomore forward Annesia Faulkner picked up the first of her two assists on the night on the score by sending a long cross from the far left corner into the box. Mailley was unable to control it and Hastings was there to pounce on the loose ball and finish it into the right side from nine yards out.

The Terps controlled the game for the remainder of the half and held onto their 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes of play. The defense, which was anchored by center backs Mary Casey and Sade Ayinde, held Mason to just four shots in the first half, none of which were on goal.

No. 14 BC Women's Soccer Earns 1-0 Win Over BU

Freshman Julia Bouchelle scored her first collegiate goal to lead Boston College past rival Boston University, 1-0, in the season opener for both teams at Nickerson Field. The Eagles are 1-0 and lead the head-to-head series vs. the Terriers, 9-4.

No. 14 Boston College will play its next two games on the road as the Eagles will travel to California to play both Oregon State (Aug. 29) and Stanford (Aug. 31).

The Eagles struck in the 32nd minute when Brianna Wilson-Byrne found Gina DiMartino outside the box to the right of the BU goalkeeper Janie Reilly. DiMartino cut away from one defender and then sent a nice soft pass to Bouchelle. The Eagles freshman midfielder blasted the shot to the far post past a diving BU goalkeeper for a 1-0 Eagles le.

Davidson edges Tech 2-1

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson's Melanee Smith recorded one goal and one assist as the host Wildcats slipped past Virginia Tech 2-1 in the season opener for both teams at Alumni Field.

The two squads played evenly and the match was scoreless for the majority of the first half. However, in the 34th minute, Davidson's Kyri Bye-Nagel, the Wildcats' leader in goals scored and total points from a year ago, received a pass from Smith and fired a shot to the back of the net to give Davidson a 1-0 lead.
