Clemson Women's Soccer Team Defeats Wofford 4-0 in Home Opener

CLEMSON, SC - The Clemson women's soccer team defeated Wofford by a score of 4-0 in its season and home opening game on Saturday night at Historic Riggs Field. Freshman forward Maddy Elder scored two of the Tigers' four goals in the victory.

Clemson took a 1-0 lead into halftime after scoring on a penalty kick taken by senior midfielder Molly Franklin. Junior forward Judea Davis was taken down in the box, which resulted in the penalty kick opportunity for the Tigers.

Elder scored her second goal of the game, season and her career in the 61st minute. She dribbled up the field past a Wofford defender and shot the unassisted goal by the Terrier keeper.

No. 1 Carolina Wins Wild Opener Against No. 3 UCLA

Senior forward Casey Nogueira, who won five National Player of the Year awards for the Tar Heels last year, led the balanced Carolina offense with a pair of goals. Sophomore forward Courtney Jones had a goal and two assists and senior midfielder Tobin Heath, junior midfielder Ali Hawkins and sophomore forward Emmalie Pfankuch all scored a goal and has an assist in the match. UNC's other goal came from junior forward Katie Klimczak.

Carolina jumped on the Bruins right from the start. In the first minute of the game, the Tar Heels earned a throw-in deep in the UCLA defensive half. Junior forward Jessica McDonald's throw went into the box where both teams had players scrapping for possession. The ball squired out to an unmarked Tobin Heath near of the top of the penalty area and Heath one-timed it into the lower left corner of the frame. The goal at the 41-second mark put the Tar Heels up 1-0.

The ninth and final goal of the night came from Emmalie Pfankuch, the third of her career, as she scored off an assist by Ali Hawkins. Pfankuch found herself with space on the right side of the box and she sent a shot from about 12 yards away with eluded Dimmitt and found the left side netting.
