Florida State Opens Season With 7-0 Victory Over Jacksonville TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Sixth-ranked Florida State (1-0-0) registered a goal from five different Seminoles including a hat trick from Becky Edwards as the Garnet and Gold opened the 2009 campaign with a 7-0 victory over Jacksonville (0-1-0). The Seminoles won for the fourth straight time at home to open the season, while improving to 9-5-1 all-time on opening day. With seven goals on Friday night, the Seminoles set the school record for the most goals scored on opening day surpassing the previous mark of five set just last year against UCF. The win was the 10th straight for Florida State over Jacksonville. Edwards registered her first career hat trick in the win while it marked just her second career multi-goal game. With three goals in the season opener, the Downingtown, Pa., native tied her career-high for goals in a single-season as she tallied three as a sophomore in 2007. Edwards entered her senior season with just five career goals. Wake Forest Impressive in 5-0 Season-Opening Win Over High Point WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior forward Kaley Fountain scored two goals and junior midfielder Bianca D'Agostino added a goal and two assists as Wake Forest opened the season with an impressive 5-0 victory over High Point on Friday night at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons jumped on the Panthers from the outset and held possession for most of the game. Wake Forest had a staggering 31-1 advantage in shots, including a 14-0 edge in shots on goal. Wake Forest was aggressive from the opening whistle, attempting six shots in the first nine minutes of the game. The Deacs attempted 17 shots in the first 45 minutes, but were only able to manage one goal. Wake added 14 shots in the second half, and tallied four goals.
Class Goals Gives Women's Soccer Win Over ODU RALEIGH, N.C. – In the opening game of the NC State women’s soccer season first-year head coach Steve Springthorpe not only chalked up his first Wolfpack win, 3-0 over Old Dominion, but he also came out on top in a match up against his former college coach and mentor Joe Pereira. It was something Springthorpe spent a lot of time thinking about leading up to this head-to-head battle at Dail Soccer Field. After tonight’s result it may take even longer to forget. But it was more than just about the two coaches and their friendship. It was about getting his program off on the right foot and they certainly did that by defeating a perennially strong Old Dominion team that beat the Pack last year 1-0 in Norfolk, Va. Terps Top Army To Start 2009 Season WEST POINT, N.Y. - The University of Maryland women's soccer team kicked off its 2009 season with a decisive 3-0 victory over Army, the defending Patriot League champions, at Clifton Field. After a scoreless first half in which the Terps had some scoring chances, Maryland broke through with a goal by sophomore Ashley Grove. The forward from Rochester, N.Y., took a pass from senior Megan Watson and dribbled through several Black Knight defenders before burying a shot into the upper left 90 in the 55th minute. It didn't take the Terps long to tack on an insurance goal. Sophomore Jasmyne Spencer, who scored goals in each of the two preseason games for Maryland, scored her first career goal in the 56th minute. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native finished the ball from 12 yards out past Army goalkeeper Alex Lostetter and into the top right corner. The ball moved quickly from the Terrapin defensive zone to Spencer from Maryland goalkeeper Mary Casey to midfielder Caitlin McDowell, who each picked up an assist on the score. No. 8 Gators Slip Past Hurricanes, 1-0 CORAL GABLES - The University of Miami women's soccer team (0-1-0) fell to No. 8 Florida (1-0-0) Friday evening at Cobb Stadium, 1-0 in both teams season-opener. The only difference in the contest was an early second-half goal from the visiting Gators, in front of a Miami record-shattering crowd of 2,277 spectators. Florida's Ashlee Elliott tallied the game's only goal as she headed Tricia Townsend's long entry pass over the outstretched hands of the charging Vikki Alonzo in only the third minute of the second half. Miami had opportunities throughout however, especially in the games first several minutes and again late in the contest. In all, the `Canes held a 15-13 advantage in shots, as each team put six on goal. Virginia Suffers 1-0 Loss at No. 6 Penn State in Season Opener UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 11 Cavalier women’s soccer team fell to No. 6 Penn State 1-0 in the season opener for both teams at Jeffrey Field. Danielle Toney’s goal in the seventh minute was the only tally of the game, as Virginia’s streak of nine consecutive season-opening victories was snapped. Toney got ball on a clearance of a corner kick and made a 70-yard run to the top of the box to fire a far post shot for the opening goal of the game. The Cavaliers had chances to draw even in the first half, outshooting the Nittany Lions 10-7 overall, but Penn State took the 1-0 advantage into the break.
