July 31, 2008
Greensboro, N.C. – ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year Kelsie Chaudoin of Virginia leads the 2008 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team announced Thursday by Commissioner John D. Swofford. Chaudoin, a senior from Germantown, Tenn. who is majoring in Architecture, has been selected to both the 2007 and 2008 All-ACC Academic teams and was chosen a first-team All-American this year by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA), helping to lead Virginia to a fifth-place national finish. A three-time member of the ACC’s Crew of the Year for Virginia (2006-08), Chaudoin is a Dean’s List student and a four-time member of the ACC’s Honor Roll. She is the inaugural choice for ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A total of three All-Americans, 14 CRCA Scholar-Athletes and seven CRCA All-Region honorees are featured on the 2008 All-ACC Academic Rowing Team. The 35 rowers were selected from a pool of 148 nominees from the ACC’s six schools who sponsor rowing—Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia—an impressive average of almost 25 nominees per school. To be nominated for the ACC All-Academic team, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average in the winter semester and have maintained a 3.0 career GPA at their respective schools. The three CRCA All-Americans were Chaudoin, Elizabeth McIntee of North Carolina, a senior from Bala Cynwyd, Pa., and Suzanne Van Fleet of Clemson, a senior from Exton, Pa. Chaudoin and Van Fleet were named to the CRCA All-American first team, while McIntee was a second-team selection. A total of nine rowers repeated from last year’s All-ACC Academic team, including Chaudoin, Van Fleet, McIntee, Tracy Maciolek (Howell, N.J.) of Boston College, Nicole Rau (Wyoming, Mich.) of Clemson, Laura Cordner (Melbourne, Australia) of Miami, Ruby Woodside (Natick, Mass.) of North Carolina as well as Virginia’s Mary Eddy (Arlington, Va.) and Caitlin Mixter (Oakton, Va.). For the third consecutive year Virginia, which captured its ninth straight ACC Rowing title this past year, led or tied for the lead among all schools matching Clemson with eight selections each. Miami had seven honorees followed by North Carolina with five, Duke with four and Boston College with three. Mixter, who this year became the first coxswain to be named to the All-ACC Rowing Team for the third time, was one of 10 All-ACC honorees who also earned selection to the All-ACC Academic team. Joining Mixter were Chaudoin, and Bridget Wandelt (Fairfax, Va.) of UVa; Maciolek of Boston College; Van Fleet of Clemson; Cordner and Kelly Amsler (Redmond, Wash.) of Miami; Alex Japhet (Everett, Wash.) of Duke; and McIntee and Woodside of North Carolina.
