Virginia's First Varsity Eight Claims ACC Crew of the Week Citation Presented by Chevrolet

Greensboro, N.C.-- Virginia's First Varsity Eight Crew was named the final 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week Presented by Chevrolet Tuesday after defeating 11th-ranked Clemson, 20th-ranked Notre Dame, Duke, 25th-ranked Louisville and Oklahoma last Saturday at the Oak Ridge Invitational on Lake Melton in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The ACC Crew of the Week honor was the first this year for Virginia's First Varsity Eight boat which is composed of coxswain Sidney Thorsten (Atlanta, Ga.), and rowers Kristine O'Brien (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), Christine Roper (Reading, St. James, Jamaica), Fiona Schlesinger (New Malden, Surrey, United Kingdom), Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.), Keziah Beall (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), Sarah Borchelt (Boston, Mass.), Claudia Blandford (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Carli Goldberg (Sarasota, Fla.).
UVa's First Varsity Eight posted their best time of the year (6:26.0) in defeating both ACC rivals Clemson (6:31.86) and Duke (6:34.78) in the six-team race.
Earlier in the day, the UVa team posted a 6:35.20 clocking in winning its heat over Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Tulsa.
The win in the First Varsity Eight was one of five victories for the Cavaliers on the weekend which also took home wins in the Second Varsity Eight, the First Varsity Four, the Open Four and the Third Varsity Eight.
Virginia's 1V8+ captured Crew of the Week honors over First Varsity Eight crews from Clemson, which finished second, and Duke, which posted a season-best time of 6:34.78 to outdistance 20th-ranked Notre Dame, 25th-ranked Louisville as well as Oklahoma to finish third.
The NCAA Rowing Selection Show this afternoon at 5 pm will announce the field for the 2011 NCAA Rowing Championships, which will be held May 27-29 at the Gold River in Sacramento, Calif.
