INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The No. 5 Virginia women's rowing team has been awarded a berth into the 2007 NCAA Championships on May 25-27 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

The Cavaliers, which won the South/Central Regional Championships last weekend, are one of 12 teams receiving invitations to the national meet and the only ACC school to participate. Also competing are Brown, California, Harvard, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Princeton, Southern Cal, Tennessee, Washington, and Yale. Four at-large boats were also selected: Central Florida, Dartmouth, Stanford, and UCLA.

Hosted by Tennessee, the multi-school event begins on Friday, May 25 with the varsity eight heats. On Saturday, May 26, semifinal action begins at 8 a.m. with the varsity eight. The national championship races commence on Sunday, May 27 at 10:15 a.m. with the varsity four petitie final. The Division I awards ceremony is slated to follow the last race at approximately 12:15 p.m.

In the South regional rankings, Virginia is the top-ranked team. Since the NCAA began its championship competition in 1997, Virginia participated in the first nine (and 10 of the 11) NCAA Championships, missing only the 2006 event.

In 1999, the Cavaliers tied for first nationally but finished second in the tie-breaker. UVa has had five boats win national championships- second varsity eight (1998, 1999, 2005) and varsity four (2004, 2005).

As a team, Virginia has always finished the NCAA Championships among the nation's top seven teams, finished second twice (1999, 2005).
