Tiger Rowing Finishes 11th at Aramark Central/South Sprints

Oak Ridge, TN - The Clemson rowing team finished 11th overall at the Aramark Central/South Sprints this weekend on Melton Hill Lake. The Tigers were fifth among schools in the South Region. Overall, 23 schools participated in the regatta.

Virginia won the event with a total of 440 points, finishing ahead of Ohio State (366) and Tennessee (352). The Tigers totaled 225 points for their 11th-place showing. Clemson improved vastly as a team in 2007. The Tigers were 18th at regionals in the spring of 2006, including eighth among schools in the South Region.

The novice 8+ was a highlight from Sunday action. Clemson's crew won the petite final with a time of 7:08.1. The Tigers finished ahead of Kansas, Ohio State, UCF, Iowa, and Tennessee in that event. In the varsity 4+ petite final, Clemson placed fifth with a time of 7:55.17. Michigan State won the varsity 4+ petite final, with Michigan in the runner-up spot.

Duke Rowing Finishes 12th At 2007 Aramark Central/South Region Sprints

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Duke rowing team captured 190 points to finish 12th at the 2007 Aramark Central/South Region Sprints over the weekend at Melton Hill Lake. Virginia took the overall title with 440 points. Ohio State placed second with 366 points, while Tennessee (352), Wisconsin (346) and Notre Dame (341) rounded out the top five.

Duke took sixth place in the South Region standings behind Virginia, Tennessee, Central Florida, Louisville and Clemson.

In Duke's first race of the day, the novice 8+ crew of Ashley Holmstrom (coxswain), Lesley King, Katherine Henrichs, Mary Caroline Dyke, Steffi Decker, Amanda Pade, Kim Atkins, Dani Beckerman and Stephanie Silk finished sixth in the C Final with a time of 7:46.23 to earn four points.

Miami Rowing Concludes the Final Day at the Aramark South/Central Sprints

Oak Ridge, Tenn. -The Miami rowing squad concluded action at the Aramark South/Central Championships Sunday with the Varsity Four, JV Eight, and Varsity competing in the C Final Sunday, at the Melton Hill Lake.

Miami's first race of the day saw a sixth-place finish by the Varsity Four crew with a time of 8:04.98, capturing six points.

In the second race of the day, the Hurricanes' JV Eight boat posted a time of 7:04.25 to finish fifth, earning them 30 points.

Tar Heels Wrap Up Season At South/Central Sprints

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The UNC rowing team wrapped up the 2006-07 campaign Sunday with a second day of racing at the Aramark South/Central Sprints on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Tar Heels finished the weekend ninth in the South Region standings and 20th overall with 99 points. Virginia led the way overall and in the South Region with 440 points.

The Tar Heel novice eight had the day's best performance, following up its Saturday semifinal win with another victory in Sunday's C final. UNC finished in 7:15.60, ahead of Cincinnati (7:27.08), Indiana (7:28.08), Murray State (7:39.18), Tennessee B (7:41.90) and Duke (7:46.23).

The Carolina varsity eight finished sixth in its C final in 7:06.05. UNC's second varsity eight was second in the D final in 7:24.42.

No. 5 Virginia Captures South/Central Regional Championships

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The No. 5 Virginia women's rowing team swept all five grand final races to capture the overall Aramark South/Central Regional Championship and the South Region Championship on Sunday morning at Melton Hill Lake.

Virginia is the first team in the regional's history to win every race- preliminary, semifinal, and final. Since joining the South Region in 2003 (UVa competed in the East Region previously). Virginia has now won South Region four times in the last five years (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007) and the South/Central team championship three times in the last five seasons (2004, 2005, 2007).

"It was unbelievable," Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. "To this point, as far as overall team effort goes, this was the best day in Virginia women's rowing history so far. We're really looking forward to the NCAA Championships and doing well there as well."
