Virginia's First Varsity Eight Named ACC Crew of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The first varsity eight from Virginia has been tabbed the season's final Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week after sweeping three ranked opponents at the Windermere Real Estate Classic in Redwood Shores, Calif., last weekend.

It marks the first time this season UVa's first varsity eight crew of Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Jennifer Cromwell, Melanie Kok, Libby McCann, Emelia Colman-Shepherd, Lauren Hutchins, Kelsie Chaudoin, Sara Lippa, and Anna Samaha has received the league's weekly honors.

Last Saturday, the 13th-ranked Cavaliers topped No. 8 UCLA as they captured a two-second victory over the Bruins in 6:58.53 and later claimed its second win of the day by knocking off No. 19 Washington in 7:08.1. On Sunday, UVa completed its clean sweep, finishing seven seconds ahead of No. 14 Washington State in 6:44.92.

Of the 10 schools competing in the regatta, the entire Virginia team was recognized by the Classic as the only school to win every race it competed in (11-0).

Up next for the Cavaliers and the rest of the league's rowing teams will be the 2007 ACC Rowing Championship, which takes place Saturday, April 21, in Lake Hartwell, S.C. Clemson will host the league championship for the fourth year in a row and sixth all-time.
