April 8, 2007 Tiger Rowing Claims Wilkins Trophy at George Washington Invitational Washington, DC - The Clemson rowing team took home the Howard Wilkins Trophy on Saturday at the George Washington Invitational. The trophy was given to the Tigers by virtue of Clemson being the women's overall point winner. The Tigers claimed victories in seven of eight races on Saturday, including sweeps in a pair of races by the varsity 8+, second varsity 8+, and varsity 4+. In the varsity 8+, Clemson first faced Iowa in the morning session. The Tigers posted a time of 6:23.5, better than the Hawkeyes' time of 6:28.5. In the afternoon, Clemson crossed the finish line in 6:19.8 and defeated a respected Navy crew. Navy's varsity 8+ received votes this week for the top 20 of the US Rowing/CRCA coaches' poll. No. 7 Virginia Wins 9 Races In Competition LAKE MONTICELLO, Va. - The No. 7 Virginia women's rowers won 9 of 10 races against Central Florida and Michigan State on Saturday at Lake Monticello. The Cavaliers hosted Central Florida, Duke, and No. 20 Michigan State at their final home regatta. In the day's final event Central Florida upset No. 7 Virginia in the varsity eight race. The Cavaliers finished in a time of 6:33.16 behind Central Florida's 6:31.86. Virginia's boat included Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Renee Albers, Katrin Sydlik, Bridget Fowler, Heather Gardner, Lauren Hutchins, Yvonne Epp, Jennifer Cromwell, and Melanie Kok. Michigan State (6:30.00) beat Duke (6:33.10) in the other varsity eight competition. Duke Rowing Falls To Central Florida & No. 20 Michigan State On Saturday CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Duke women's rowing team competed against Central Florida and No. 20 Michigan State on Saturday at Lake Monticello. The Blue Devils raced in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight boats. In Duke's first race of the day, the novice eight crew was defeated by Central Florida. The Golden Knights finished in 7:12.7, while the Blue Devils had a time of 7:46.6. In the varsity four race, Central Florida's boat won with a time of 7:43.7 and Duke was second at 7:48.5. The Golden Knights then won the second varsity eight race with a time of 6:51.3, with the Blue Devils finishing second at 6:58.4. Central Florida ended the morning session with a victory in the varsity eight race, winning with a time of 6:37.9. Duke's varsity eight crew finished in 6:41.9.
