USA Wins World Cup with 14-8 win over Australia, Greer Named MVP of Match.
July 14, 2001 High Wycombe, England - The USA won their fourth consecutive world title with a 14-8 defeat of Australia today, keeping their undefeated run through the championships alive. Heather Dow, the assistant coach of the USA team, won her fourth gold medal while Cherie Greer and Jess Wilk both won their third title. Greer was named the MVP of the title match with three ground balls, three draw controls, two caused turnovers and a goal in the effort. Wilk came in the second half and saved three shots and allowed only three goals. Bonnie Rosen started for the USA and marshalled the championships' best defense. Ariza also played in the game for the Americans and had a pair of ground balls to assist the USA effort.
Greer was also named the recipient of the inaugural Wes Patterson trophy, which goes to that player who best exemplifies the ideals of the game.
