USA Defeats Canada 25-2 in Semifinals, Advances to World Cup Championship Match
July 13, 2001 High Wycombe, England - Bonnie Rosen scored her first goal of the 2001 IFWLA World Cup as the Americans defeated the Canadians 25-2 today in the semifinals of the championships. Rosen and Cherie Greer, both Virginia alumni, scored in the victory while Jess Wilk made two saves in the second half and the Americans advanced to the finals of the World Championships for the sixth consecutive time. The USA will face Australia for the gold medal in a rematch of the last world cup, which took place in 1997. The Americans edged the Aussies 3-2 in triple overtime to claim the title when Cherie Greer's shot was saved but Amory Rowe threw it back into the net for the game-winner. Greer started off the game with two goals in just over three minutes, helping the USA to a 3-0 lead with 26:53 to play in the first half. She also led the American side with five ground balls and two caused turnovers and three draw controls. Rosen's goal came three minutes into the second half as she raced into the arc from the midfield and took a pass from Quinn Carney high into the cage. Rosen had two ground balls and a draw control for the USA.
Ariza had three draw controls for the Americans and picked up four ground balls. Jess Wilk, who came into the cage in the second half, played 30 minutes and had two saves while allowing only one goal.
