Juras, Hordy Star In IWLCA North-South Game
June 25, 2007 by IWLCA Media Relations Downingtown, Pa. - Former University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players Christina Juras and Kristen Hordy both took part in the IWLCA North-South game last week. Juras scored three goals and Hordy recorded two saves in 25 minutes of action in the goal as the UNC duo's South squad defeated the North, 18-8. James Madison's Kelly Berger scored four goals and added an assist and won two draw controls en route to an MVP performance for the South team. The game was held as part of the IWLCA Champions' Cup at the United Sports Training Center. Berger and Virginia's Kate Breslin (2g 3a) both had five points to lead all scorers, while Coco Stanwick's five draw controls helped the South lead in that category 19-5. The South jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Krista Pellizzi (from Mary Key), Juras and Kate McHarg before Hofstra's Becky Thorn got the North on the board. A goal by Key off an assist from Pellizzi followed by a draw control straight to a goal from George Washington's Molly Gannon upped the score to 5-1. Penn State's Karen Long cut the deficit back to three with a goal, but Stanwick assisted Katie Doolittle and won the draw, setting up a Breslin goal from McHarg off an 8-meter restart to push the score to 7-2. Rutgers' Katie Batiuck struck to stem the tide, but goals by Berger, Juras, and Key (from Breslin) made the score 10-3 at the break. Hofstra's Kimberly Hillier and Princeton's Kathleen Miller combined to start off the second half with a run for the north as Hillier assisted Miller and then won the draw. The North worked the ball over to Miller, who scored her second consecutive goal to pull the North within five at 10-5. Stanwick, however, sandwiched a pair of draw controls around McHarg's second goal, and Berger scored three consecutive goals and subsequently won the draw control to set up Stanwick for a goal to make it 15-6. The North rallied with consecutive goals from Long and Holy Cross' Trish Sutton, but Breslin scored off an assist from McHarg before feeding Virginia teammate Jess Wasilewski to make the score 17-7. Thorn's second goal of the game cut the deficit below 10 briefly, but Breslin fed Juras for a goal in the final minute for the final tally of 18-8. Georgetown's Maggie Koch (3 saves) and UNC's Hordy (2 saves) combined for five saves for the South while Saint Francis' Samantha Morgan (2 saves) and Holy Cross (3 saves) also combined for five saves for the North. Scoring: Keepers: Draws: South 19 (Stanwick 5); North 8 (Hillier 4)
