Women's Lacrosse Terps Earn Postseason Recognition
May 28, 2003 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Honors keep rolling in for the University of Maryland women's lacrosse team, a group that turned in an 18-4 record, notched the Atlantic Coast Conference title and earned a spot in the 2003 NCAA Final Four. Five Terrapins were named to this year's Brine IWLCA-US All-American team while four players earned recognition for their play from Warrior/Inside Lacrosse. Seniors Sonia Judd (Attack; Darlington, South Australia) and Alexis Venechanos (Goalkeeper; Yorktown, N.Y.) were joined on the IWLCA's first team by junior Kelly Coppedge (Midfield; Annapolis) to give the Terps the second-most All-Americans on the first team, trailing only Princeton's four. Acacia Walker (Midfield; Annapolis) followed Coppedge's footsteps of a year ago by earning third team All-America recognition as just a sophomore while senior Julie Shank (Defense; Arnold, Md.) also made her way onto the third team. The Warrior/Inside Lacrosse team had three Terps named All-American as Coppedge and Venechanos earned first team recognition while Judd was named to the second team. Inside Lacrosse also announces players of the year by position and Venechanos was named the publication's national Goalie of the Year while freshman sensation Delia Cox (Midfield; Newbury, Mass.) was named Rookie of the Year. Coppedge led the Terps this year in scoring with 95 points and an NCAA-best 73 goals. She is a finalist for this year's Tewaaraton Trophy and Honda Award - each recognizing the best player in the sport - while having already been named ACC Player of the Year. Cox led all Maryland freshman in scoring with 42 points behind an impressive 36 goals in her first year. She was also the team leader in ground balls with 71 while having earned ACC Player of the Week recognition for her play during the season. Judd capped her career at Maryland with her finest season wearing the Red, White, Black and Gold. She finished second on the team in scoring with 74 points behind a strong .505 shooting percentage while being named All-ACC and ACC all-tournament. Like Judd, Shank finished her tenure in College Park with her finest season, leading a Maryland defense that held opponents to a paltry 6.54 goals per game. The All-ACC and ACC all-tourney performer also came up with career highs in ground balls (48) and caused turnovers (27). The senior who stepped up her performance most dramatically in 2003, Venechanos, becomes Maryland's third national Goalie of the Year, following the footsteps of Alex Kahoe (2000) and Mandy Stevenson (1993). She posted a .575 save percentage and a 6.62 goals against average while winning 16 of the 19 games she started. Walker also made tremendous strides in '03, leading the Terrapins in assists with 33 while finishing second on the team in points with 62. Just a rising-junior, she will head into her third season just five points shy of the century plateau for her young career.
