May 21, 2008
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior midfielders Dana Dobbie and Kelly Kasper have been named nominees for the Collegiate Women Sports Award sponsored by Honda. The women's lacrosse captains are the first teammates to be nominees since Maryland and Georgetown both had a pair in 2001. This is just the third time a program has been honored with two nominees. This is Dobbie's second-straight season as a nominee for the award. Associate head coach Jen Adams won the first two Honda Sports Awards in 2000 and 2001 as a player with the Terps. Adams and teammate Quinn Carney were both nominated in 2001 along with Bowen Holder and Sheehan Stanwick from Georgetown.
Dobbie, who is also a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, leads the country this season in draw controls with 126 which is a new NCAA single-season record and she averages 6.00 per outing. The Guelph, Ontario product leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in goals (70), goals per game (3.33), and draw controls. She is also second in points per game (4.00) behind Kasper. Her goals and goals per game numbers rank fifth and 15th in the country, respectively. Kasper, who is already a two-time All-American and a Tewaaraton finalist with Dobbie, led the Terps with 87 points on 43 goals and 44 assists. Her 44 assists this year rank fifth all-time at Maryland in a single season. She was also second on the team with 52 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers.
