Kaiser Selected One of Five Finalists for Tewaaraton Trophy
May 16, 2001 WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Duke University junior midfielder Kate Kaiser has been selected one of five finalists for the inaugural 2001 Tewaaraton Trophy as the National Player of the Year. The list was trimmed to five from a group of 19 of the best female lacrosse players in the country. Maryland attack Jen Adams and midfielder Quinn Carney, Georgetown attack Sheehan Stanwick, and Princeton midfielder Julie Shaner were named the other four finalists for the award, to be presented to the top male and female lacrosse players in a reception at the University Club on June 6th. "Our 19 candidates for the inaugural Tewaaraton Trophy had great seasons, but these five players really established themselves as the elite players in the country," said Tewaaraton women's committee chairman Kim Simons. "We look forward to presenting one of these players with the first annual Tewaaraton Trophy."
About the finalists:
Each of the five candidates, with the exception of Duke's Kaiser, will be participating in the women's Final Four this weekend at Johns Hopkins. The Tewaaraton Trophy is the first of its kind in college sports, honoring the top male and female players in college lacrosse in an awards ceremony at the prestigious University Club of Washington, DC. The candidates for the Tewaaraton Trophy were selected and are judged by the six-member Tewaaraton Trophy women's selection committee, which evaluates players by their on-field performance throughout the entirety of the season. No preference is given to players participating in the NCAA tournament. The voting committee consists of six of the most respected coaches in the women's lacrosse: Chairman and Georgetown head coach Kim Simons, Vanderbilt head coach Cathy Swezey, Virginia head coach Julie Myers, Middlebury head coach Missy Foote, James Madison head coach Jenny Ulehla, and Princeton head coach Chris Sailer.
A winner from the five finalists will be chosen in a ceremony at the
University Club on June 6th, with all 10 male and female finalists and some
of the biggest names in men's college lacrosse in attendance. Legendary
sportswriter and former Cornell lacrosse player Dick Schaap with emcee the
event.
