GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NCAA announced Monday evening the 16-team field for the 2006 Women's Lacrosse Championship. The Atlantic Coast Conference received four at-large spots as Duke, Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland all qualified for this year's tournament. Duke and Virginia will enter the championship as the top-two seeds, respectively, while North Carolina garnered a No. 5 overall seed. The Blue Devils, Cavaliers and Tar Heels will all host first round games beginning Sunday, May 14.

Duke, the No. 1 overall seed, will play host to Holy Cross, winners of the Patriot League. The Blue Devils are making their ninth consecutive tournament appearance after finishing the regular season with a 16-2 mark, 4-1 in the ACC. The Crusaders advanced to the field of 16 after downing Le Moyne College, champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, in a play-in game for an automatic berth. This will be the first tournament appearance for Holy Cross. The Blue Devils are 6-8 all-time in NCAA Tournament play, but have won five of eight first round match-ups.

The Virginia Cavaliers earned the No. 2 overall seed and will welcome the Princeton Tigers to Charlottesville, Va., on Sunday afternoon. Virginia captured its third conference title back on April 30 downing Duke 13-8 in the ACC title game. The Cavaliers are making their 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and 21st trip overall (19 NCAA, 2 AIAW). The Tigers received an automatic bid claiming the Ivy League title and will enter the tournament with a mark of 11-5. Virginia and Princeton have met 23 times in school history with the Cavaliers holding a 12-11 advantage. This will be the seventh meeting in NCAA Tournament play with both teams winning three games.

North Carolina received the No. 5 overall seed after finishing the regular season with a 12-5 record, 4-1 in ACC play. The Tar Heels are appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in 11 years. UNC will play host to a familiar opponent as they welcome the Maryland Terrapins to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Sunday. The bid marks the 17th consecutive trip for the Terrapins who have captured nine national titles, the most of any team in the nation. North Carolina defeated Maryland earlier this year posting an 11-9 victory in Chapel Hill. The Terps lead the all-time series 11-6.

The Division I semifinal and championship games will be held at Nickerson Field in Boston, Mass., May 26 & 28, hosted by Boston University. The championship game will be broadcast live on College Sports Television (CSTV) at 12 noon EST, Sunday May 28.
