![]() Four ACC Teams to Participate in NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship
May 6, 2008
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NCAA announced Monday evening the 16-team field for the 2008 Women's Lacrosse Championship. The Atlantic Coast Conference received four bids for the fourth consecutive year as Virginia secured the league's automatic qualifier and Duke, Maryland and North Carolina were selected on an at-large basis. Maryland and Virginia will enter the championship as the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, respectively. The Terrapins are making their 19th consecutive appearance in the championship (1990-2008) and have won the most national championships in NCAA women's lacrosse history with 10, including seven straight from 1995-2001. Both Virginia and Duke hold NCAA appearance streaks of five or more years. The Terps finished the regular season 17-2 and will host Atlantic 10 champion Temple (13-6) on Sunday, May 11 at 1 p.m. at the Maryland Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Maryland sports the seventh-best scoring offense in the country and also boasts one of the top scoring defenses as it ranks eighth. The Terps are also second in the country in draw controls with senior Dana Dobbie accounting for 114 of them, a new NCAA single season record. The winner of Sunday's game will meet either No. 6 seed Georgetown or Duke in the quarterfinals. As the No. 4 seed, Virginia (14-3) will face North Carolina in the first round of the tournament on Sunday, May 11 at 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. Making its 23rd NCAA appearance overall, UVa holds an overall record of 28-17 in the postseason tournament. The Cavs have received a bid the last 13 years straight, and have reached the final game nine times, winning it three times. Virginia was the national runner-up after falling, 15-13, to Northwestern in last year's final game. North Carolina, which posted a 12-6 record in regular season play, has reached the quarterfinals of each of the last three NCAA Tournaments and made Final Four appearances in 1997, 1998 and 2002. The winner of Sunday's Virginia and UNC game faces the winner of the Towson at fifth-seeded Syracuse game in the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 17. The game will be played on the campus of the higher-seed. After finishing the regular season with an 11-7 tally, the Blue Devils will travel to play No. 6 seed Georgetown on Sunday, May 11, at a time still to be determined. The game marks the 11th consecutive year that Duke has qualified for the NCAA tournament. In that span, the Blue Devils have advanced to four national semifinal games (1999, 2005, 2006 and 2007) and accumulated a 10-10 tournament record. If Duke were to advance, the Blue Devils would face the winner of Maryland and Temple in quarterfinal action on Saturday, May 17. Six conferences have been awarded automatic qualification for the 2008 championship. In addition, the champions of the Northeast Conference and the America East Conference competed in a play-in game for one automatic berth, while the champions of the Metro Atlantic Conference and the Patriot League competed in a second play-in game for the final automatic berth. The remaining eight teams were selected on an at-large basis. Eight first-round games will be conducted Sunday, May 11, and four quarterfinal games will be played Saturday, May 17. These preliminary-round games will be played on the campuses of competing institutions. The winners of the four quarterfinal games will advance to the semifinals and final May 23 and 25 at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Maryland, hosted by Towson University. The semifinal games will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports Network at 6 and 8:30 p.m. ET, Friday, May 23. The championship game will be broadcast live at 7 p.m., Sunday, May 25.
