GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina junior attacker Abbey Friend and Maryland senior midfielder Katie Schwarzmann have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Friend posted game highs with five goals and six points in third-ranked North Carolina’s 17-11 win over No. 8 Georgetown on Saturday afternoon. She also gathered two ground balls in the win. In Tuesday’s win at High Point, Friend had two assists, a ground ball and a caused turnover.
The native of Canandaigua, N.Y., tallied eight points in two wins to earn her second ACC weekly honor this season.
Schwarzmann was key in No. 1 Maryland’s defense on the weekend as the Terps held back-to-back opponents to a combined eight goals on just 16 shots. Schwarzmann marked Boston College’s Mikaela Rix, holding her to one shot and zero goals in the 13-5 win over the Eagles.
The native Sykesville, Md., was tasked with defending No. 18 Stony Brook’s Demmianne Cook, who entered the week as nation’s leading goal scorer. Schwarzmann held Cook without a goal or shot in an 8-3 victory. The reigning Tewaaraton Award winner also added four goals and two assists on the weekend.
It is the sixth career ACC weekly award for Schwarzmann, who has four Offensive Player of the Week honors and now has won Defensive Player of the Week twice.
