March 12, 2013
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Maryland senior attacker Alex Aust and North Carolina senior midfielder Kara Cannizzaro have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Co-Offensive Players of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. Duke freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea has been recognized as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Aust, the reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week, notched 19 points in a pair of wins against UMBC and No. 7 Penn State. Against the Retrievers, the senior from Sterling, Va., racked up a career-best 11 points – one shy of the Terrapin single-game record – including a program record seven assists. In the 20-10 win over No. 7 Penn State, Aust tallied four goals and four assists to become the eighth player in program history to register 100 career assists. She has tallied 38 points in her last four games and leads the nation with 51 points this season.
Cannizzaro led all players with four goals and five points in the Tar Heels’ 8-7 victory over No. 8 Virginia on Saturday. The native of Cazenovia, N.Y., scored twice in the decisive second half of the Tar Heel victory, including the unassisted game-winner with 6:49 left to the play. Cannizzaro has tallied four goals in three of her six games played this season.
Duryea earned her first career weekly honor after posting double-digit saves in just her second start in goal, finishing with 11 on the day as the Blue Devils won at No. 11 Georgetown, 11-10. The native of Beverly, Mass., made a critical stop on a free position attempt with five seconds remaining in regulation to preserve the one-goal victory for Duke. Duryea was also tabbed as the Rookie of the Week by WomensLax.com for her efforts.
