Maryland Sweeps ACC Women's Lacrosse Accolades Presented By Chevrolet For Second-Straight Week
March 8, 2011
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland senior midfielder Laura Merrifield and junior goalkeeper Brittany Dipper have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet, respectively, for the period ending on Monday, March 7.
Merrifield, despite battling the stomach flu, notched a game-high five goals to help No. 1 Maryland dominate the fifth-ranked Cavaliers, 18-6, Friday and remain perfect in 2011. The senior captain from Herftfordshire, England, tallied the first goal of the game, which proved to be the game-winner as the Terps never trailed against their ACC rival.
Dipper helped hold Virginia to only six goals as the Terrapins won their 15th consecutive match dating back to 2010 on Friday. The junior goalie was stellar in the cage in the team's lone game of the week, surrendering only six scores in 21 Virginia attempts and scooping up a pair of ground balls. Fifth-ranked Virginia was averaging more than 17 goals per game heading into Friday's ACC grudge match. The Terps have now held four of their five opponents to fewer than eight goals in 2011.
Both Merrifield and Dipper were two of Maryland's five players named to this year's Tewaaraton watch list last week.
ACC Women's Lacrosse teams return to action tonight as Maryland welcomes George Mason for a 4 p.m. contest, and North Carolina travels to Denver for a 6 p.m. tilt.
