North Carolina Sweeps First 2012 ACC Weekly Women's Lacrosse Accolades

GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina junior midfielder Kara Cannizzaro scored four goals while junior goalkeeper Lauren Maksym made 10 saves in the Tar Heels 11-9 win over fourth-ranked Florida in Chapel Hill on Saturday. The pair of juniors were named the first 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Players of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Feb. 12.
Cannizzaro, a native of Cazenovia, N.Y., earned ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors following her four-goal output, including an unassisted insurance goal that put North Carolina ahead 11-8 with 6:28 to play. Cannizzaro also controlled three draws and caused a pair of turnovers for the Tar Heels.
Teammate Lauren Maksym of North Massapequa, N.Y., earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Maksym recorded 10 saves and controlled two ground balls in picking up her first win of the year.
The third-ranked Tar Heels (1-0) return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in Lynchburg, Va. against Liberty.
