Seventh Heaven
May 20, 2001
BALTIMORE, Md. - The top-seeded and top-ranked University of Maryland women's lacrosse realized its goal today, winning its seventh straight NCAA Championship in a 14-13 overtime thriller with third-seeded Georgetown at Homewood Field in Baltimore. In doing so, the Terrapins (23-0) became the fourth Maryland team in school history to finish its season without a blemish, joining the 1995, 1996 and 1999 teams. The Terps win came with eight seconds remaining on the clock in the third overtime period. The winning goal was scored by Allison Comito after Tori Wellington had dumped the ball in to her just to the right of the goal mouth. The goal ended the contest as the two teams had gone a pair of overtimes, scoring a goal apiece, thus making the sudden death period necessary.
