The Virginia women's lacrosse team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament today with a 20-8 defeat of Temple (14-5) behind a pair of five-goal performances from Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./ Notre Dame Prep) and Amy Appelt (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), both of whom set goal-records today. Aumiller's second goal of the game, which came 9:15 into the contest and was a result of nifty stickwork in the arc, not only set the record for goals in a year with 66, but also was her 100th point of 2002. Aumiller is only the 14th person in the history of Division I intercollegiate lacrosse to record 100 points in a single year, and she ended the day with 103 points, a mark passed by only 10 people in the history of Division I intercollegiate lacrosse. Appelt's fourth goal of the game, which came 2:24 into the second half, established a new record for goals among first-years at 57. Appelt now has the school record for points (68), goals (48) and assists (20) as a first year. Appelt also ranks seventh all-time at Virginia for scoring in a year. Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./ Garden City) led the Cavalier defensive effort with three caused turnovers and six ground balls while fellow co-captain Tiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) had two caused turnovers and five ground balls. The game was delayed for 90 minutes in between halves due to a violent thunderstorm that came through the area.

The Cavaliers jumped on the scoreboard first after Andrea Pfeiffer (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) made a save on Temple's first shot. Courtney Muller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown) orchestrated the transition to the other end, including a split of a triple team, that was completed 2:31 into the game when Appelt ran the ball into the cage for a 1-0 lead. Temple won the draw and shot over the cage and Pfeiffer raced around to pick up the loose ball. In the other end Appelt fed Aumiller, who was on the crease, for the Cavaliers' second goal 3:48 into the game. After Temple again won the draw, Lauren Keller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) caused a turnover in the Virginia defensive third and Sambus scooped up the ground ball and in the Cavalier offensive third, Cary Chasney (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) fed Appelt who scored her second goal of the game 4:42 into the contest. Aumiller picked up a Temple overthrow at the restraining line and started a quick attack that saw Chasney take the bal in on her own and score, putting Virginia up 4-0 7:28 into the game and forced the Owls to take a timeout.

Aumiller then scored a pair of goals in 31 seconds to set the record for goals in a year and reach the 100-point mark in a single year. The record-setting goal and milestone point came as she maneuvered around in the arc and rifled a shot into the net for a 5-0 lead 9:15 into the game and giving her 66 goals on the year and 100 points (66g, 34a) in 2002. Courtney Young (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) won the draw and flipped it to Caitlin Banks (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) who in turn dumped it into Aumiller who was on the crease. Aumiller threw the ball into the cage for a 6-0 Virginia lead 9:46 into the game. Banks scored herself two minutes later on an 8-meter shot to put Virginia up 7-0. The Cavaliers then switched goalies as Mary Beth LaVerghetta (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) came in and made a save on the first Temple shot she faced. The Cavaliers completed the transition as Molly Cangemi (Timonium, Md./Notre Dame Prep) ran the ball into the cage and flipped it in with 3:34 to go in the half, putting the Cavaliers up 8-0.

Temple won the draw and Jen Jefferson took it right to the cage and scored on Liz McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Taft (CT)), who had come in to take LaVerghetta's place. Jefferson scored a second goal 21 seconds later as she converted an 8-meter after being fouled in the arc. The Owls scored their third consecutive goal 30 seconds after that as Noelle Cebron fed Deanna Radcliffe, cutting the margin to 8-3 with 2:25 to play.

Sambus won the next draw and in the Cavalier set attack, Chasney was fouled on a shot and was awarded an 8-meter that she deposited in the back of the net to stop the Temple run and put Virginia up 9-3. Appelt scored the next goal as she split the defense and scored with 27 seconds to play and the skies threatening to open. Appelt's goal gave Virginia 10 goals for the 18th game this year, extending the school record for consecutive games of double-digit scoring to 18. Temple won the draw and Liz Frengs took it down to the arc where she was fouled. She scored with 12 seconds to play to pull the Owls to 10-4. The Cavaliers won the draw but were unable to get off a shot and the teams went to the lockerroom for a halftime that would last 90 minutes as the field was hit with a massive thunderstorm for an hour.

The nation's leading freshman scorers started it up for the Cavaliers in the second half as Chasney and Appelt both notched goals in the opening 2:24. Chasney took a shot that was saved by Oommen but popped to the ground. An alert Chasney flicked the ball off the ground into the cage to put Virginia on the board in the second half. Lauren Keller won the draw and one minute later Appelt created her own shot in the arc, putting Virginia up 12-4 with 2:24 gone in the second half. Just over a minute later Banks took the ball behind the cage and fed Aumiller who was on the crease. Aumiller quicksticked the ball into the net for the Cavaliers' 13th goal of the game 3:46 into the second half. Pfeiffer had returned to the net to start the second half, but Temple responded with a goal as Jefferson notched a hat trick off a feed from Cebron, putting the Owls on the board 4:30 into the second half. Temple won the draw but an overthrow was picked up by Elizabeth Pinney (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) at the Virginia restraining line and in the transition Morgan Thalenberg drew a foul in the arc. She converted the 8-meter shot, giving the Cavaliers a 14-5 lead. Cebron and the Owls answered right back as she fed Robin Keevan in the arc and Keevan scored to keep the margin at eight (14-6) with 22:01 to play.

Temple shot to cut the deficit further, but Radcliffe's shot went off both pipes and Pinney picked up the loose ball in the Cavalier arc. At the other end, Young shot but Oommen made a point blank save that popped right back out to Young. Young stuck it right back into the net, putting Virginia up 15-6 9:46 into the second half. Thalenberg won the ensuing draw and brought it right upfield where she fed Chasney. Chasney in turn fed a cutting Aumiller who scored 24 seconds after Young to give the Cavaliers a ten-goal lead at 16-6. Patience Synnestvedt moved the margin to single digits as she scored an unassisted goal with 10:46 to play in the game.

Virginia responded as Keller won the draw and got the ball to Chasney, who led Appelt into the arc with a long pass. Appelt caught the ball and fired it into the cage 11 seconds after Temple's goal to move the margin back to ten at 17-7 with 10:35 to play. A Sambus caused turnover started the next scoring play as Lindsay Buchanan (Towson, Md./Towson) picked up the ground ball and the Cavaliers brought it upfield. In the set attack Cangemi ran the ball in and flipped it into the cage, giving the Cavaliers an 18-7 lead with 8:30 to play. Synnestvedt converted an 8-meter three minutes later to pull the Owls back within 10, but a Sambus goal as she snaked around in the arc pushed the margin back to 11 with 4:12 to play, and then Sambus caused a turnover and brought the ball back upfeld where Cangemi scored after creating her own shot with 2:07 to play, giving the Cavaliers 20 goals in the game, their highest output of the season.

Pfeiffer ended the game with seven saves and three goals allowed in 48 minutes of play. LaVerghetta had three saves while allowing one goal in nine minutes.

The Cavaliers advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament where they will face the UNC Tar Heels, who defeated UMBC 22-6 today. The game will take place in Chapel Hill on Sunday, May 12th--Mothers's Day-- at 1:00 pm.
