Chrest Nets Three Goals To Lead Duke To An 11-7 Win Over No. 9 Dartmouth

Sophomore Katie Chrest scored three goals to lead No. 5 Duke to an 11-7 victory over No. 9 Dartmouth on Thursday evening in Hanover, N.H. The Blue Devils improved to 12-5 on the season, including an 8-5 mark against nationally ranked competition. Dartmouth's record falls to 10-4 with the loss. Chrest scored all three of her goals in the opening half, as Duke took a 6-5 lead at halftime. Freshman Michelle Menser added a goal and an assist in the opening 30 minutes, while Corinne Broesler and Stefanie Sparks each collected goals. The Big Green tied the game at 6-6 when Kate Killen scored her second goal early in the second half, but Duke quickly regained momentum. The Blue Devils scored four unanswered goals beginning with one by senior Meghan Miller with 27:20 on the clock, and ending with another by Menser 12 minutes later. Freshmen Kristen Waagbo and Leigh Jester also had goals during the four-goal rally that put the Blue Devils ahead, 10-6. Lana Smith trimmed the Dartmouth deficit to 10-7 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest, but the Big Green could get no closer. Jester closed the scoring for Duke with 18 seconds remaining with her 20th goal of the season. Killen and Katie Fahey both had two goals for Dartmouth, while junior Katieanne Christian and senior Lana Smith each earned three-point games with one goal and two assists. Menser closed the game with two goals and an assist, while Broesler added a goal and an assist. In the nets, Duke's Megan Huether had three saves, all in the first half and Dartmouth's Devon Wills made seven stops. With the hat trick, Chrest now has a team-leading 39 goals this season and 78 in her 34 game career. After combining for four goals and an assist on Thursday, the freshmen trio of Waagbo, Jester and Menser now has 56 goals and 25 assists this season. Duke wraps up the regular season on Saturday with an 11:00 a.m. contest against Hofstra. The 2004 NCAA Championships pairings will be announce on Sunday, with the Blue Devils seeking a seventh consecutive trip to the tournament.
