April 29, 2005
2005 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship Central BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior midfielder Cary Chasney scored five goals and added an assist as the University of Virginia (13-3) advanced to the Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse championship game with a 15-11 victory over the University of Maryland (10-5) in the ACC semifinals at M&T Bank Stadium on Friday afternoon. Chasney scored three of her five goals in the first half as the Cavaliers took an 8-4 advantage in the opening 30 minutes and held on for the victory. The Cavaliers jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the first 7:13 of the game with sophomore Kate Breslin sparking the spurt with two goals. The Terrapins cut the deficit to 4-3 with back-to-back goals from senior Annie Collins and freshman Kelly Kasper. Nikki Lieb scored her 12th goal of the season with 20:32 remaining in the first half to ignite another 4-1 run by the Cavaliers, giving Virginia the four-goal lead at intermission. Kasper teamed up with junior Delia Cox for consecutive goals to start the second half, narrowing the Maryland deficit to 8-6, but that was the closest the Terrapins would get as Virginia held on for its fifth straight win over the Terps. Chasney led all scorers with her five goals, while senior attacker Amy Appelt added three goals with an assist. Kasper led the Terrapins with three goals and one assist in a losing effort.
Junior goalkeeper Ginger Miles made 10 saves for the Cavaliers, who advance to face either Duke or North Carolina in the championship game on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Maryland returns to action next Wednesday when the Terrapins face Princeton University.
