UVa Spreads the Scoring Around in 16-4 Women's Lax Win vs. Hokies

April 14, 1999

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Cavaliers used a balanced scoring attack with 14 different Hoos recording points to help Virginia defeat in-state rival Virginia Tech 16-4 Wednesday in Charlottesville. Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) and Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) had three assists, six ground balls and four caused turnovers to lead the Hoos.

The Hokies won the opening draw and took the ball down to their offensive end, where they lost it and keeper Francis Segarra (Coto Laurel, Puerto Rico) picked up the loose ball. But on the clear, she was stripped of the ball and Tech's Chris Mastro alertly picked it up and threw it to Catherine Augustyn, who was alone in front of the goal. Augustyn put it in the empty cage 21 seconds into the game for the early lead.

But the Cavaliers stormed back, scoring three goals in 27 seconds to take control of the game. On the next draw, won by the Cavaliers, Hook took it down and was awarded a free position, which she bounced to the top shelf to tie the game. On the next draw, Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) controlled it and got it to Hook, who put Virginia up 2-1 18 seconds later. Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown), the ACC Player of the Week, won the next draw and fed a streaking Fromal nine seconds later to put the Hoos up 3-1. Mia Mooney (Rosemont, Pa./Shipley) picked up a loose ball in the eight and deposited it in the net for the fourth goal, and on the next draw, Haas controlled it and tried to flip it to Jess Hull (Arnold, Md./Broadneck). The ball bounced off Hull's stick and went into the cage, giving the Hoos a 5-1 lead. Ironically, this proved to be the game-winning goal.

Tech's Dawn Will stopped the Virginia run on a charge to the cage on an assist from Augustyn, but the Cavaliers defense frustrated the Hokies the rest of the half, keeping them off the board by disrupting six of nine Hokie clears.

Hook completed her hat trick on a bouncer from the right side at 24:08. Four minutes later, Kelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) picked up a scramble in front of the cage and scored to put the Cavaliers up 7-2. Virginia's Melissa Hayes (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation)caused a broken clear and got the ball to a streaking Haas, who scored at 15:03 to put the Cavaliers up 8-2. Fromal fed a wide-open Sambus on the crease at 11:19 to push the margin to 9-2. WIth 12 minutes to go in the half, Mary Beth LaVerghetta (Lutherville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) replaced Segarra in the cage for the Cavaliers. At 3:55 Fromal assisted again, this time to Laura Lindsay (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield) to put the Hoos in double digits. The Cavaliers added a pair in the final minute of the first half as Sambus picked up a loose ball and drove through the eight for the score. Virginia Tech won the next draw but Kristin Keller (St. David's, Pa./Radnor) caused a turnover and the Hoos went on a fast break, which was converted as Mary Sauer (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) fed Lindsay with 21 seconds to go in the half.

In the second half, Tech scored the opening goal 3:28 into the period as Augustyn scored on a drive to the cage. Fromal was a part of the Virginia two-goal run as she broke the Tech clear with a caused turnover and ground ball and took it down to the arc where fed Jill Hansen (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) to put the Hoos up 13-3 at 20:46. At this point Liz McCarthy (La Jolla, Ca./Taft) replaced LaVerghetta. Fromal then scored herself on a quick stick from Samm Taylor (Springfield, Va./Robinson) at 15:45. Will scored again at 13:23 to break up the Cavalier run, but the Hoos clamped down and did not allow the Hokies to score again. Sauer scored off a feed from

Molly Cangemi (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) at 7:28 and Meredith Elwell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) converted a free position at 3:57 for the final score of the game. McCarthy made a series of spectacular saves, three at point blank range in a matter of seconds, to help preserve the win.

The Cavaliers return to action next Wednesday, April 21 as they travel to Fairfax, Va. to take on the #17 George Mason Patriots at 4:00 pm.
