Tar Heels Sweep To Weekend's Second Win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina women's lacrosse team wrapped up a successful weekend on Sunday afternoon with a second win in the ACC/ALC Challenge, this one 14-9 over Penn State. The 10th-ranked Tar Heels beat Ohio State 22-12 Friday on the first day of the event, played at Fetzer Field, and are now 10-3 on the season. Penn State fell to 3-8.

The Atlantic Coast Conference swept the American Lacrosse Conference teams, with Maryland also winning both of its games. After beating Penn State 12-11 in double overtime on Friday, the No. 3 Terrapins beat Ohio State 21-6 on Sunday.

Sophomore Kristen Taylor led the Tar Heels in both of the weekend's wins. After scoring a career-high six goals against Ohio State, she had a team-high four against the Nittany Lions. Senior Erica LaGrow scored three, sophomore Megan Bosica and freshman Corey Donohoe had two each, and Chelsea Parks, Jenn Russell and Kelly Taylor each contributed one. Bosica also had a team-high three assists on the day and Donohoe, Parks and Kelly Taylor added one each.

No. 3 Maryland Overwhelms Ohio State, 21-6

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Dana Dobbie filled the stat sheet with six goals, two assists, 10 draw controls, and four ground balls as the No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team overpowered Ohio State, 21-6, on April 4 at Fetzer Field. Classmate Kelly Kasper added three goals and a pair of assists in the win.

Five of Dobbie's six goals came in the first half and her 10 draw controls were more than the entire Buckeyes team. It was the fourth time she has picked up more draws than the entire opposition and it was her second-straight game with 10 draw controls.

Junior Kate Faas scored four goals and senior Lauren Cohen chipped in with a hat trick. Senior Allie Buote was credited with seven saves in goal in 49 minutes of work.

Scrappy Blue Devils Fall Short Against Wildcats, 15-11

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's lacrosse team took an 8-6 lead into halftime of its match with No. 1 Northwestern on Sunday afternoon in Koskinen Stadium, but was unable to hold on against the Wildcats' high-powered attack and fell 15-11. It marked Duke's fifth straight game, and seventh in its last eight, against a ranked opponent. The game is available on-demand on ACCSelect.com.

After falling behind 4-0 and 5-1, Duke scored three consecutive goals midway through the first half and connected for seven of the last eight scores of the first to take the 8-6 edge into the locker room. Midfielders Allie Johnson, Lindsay Gilbride and Emma Hamm were pivotal in that run, each scoring twice. Unfortunately that trio would be held to just one goal, by Hamm, in the second stanza.

The two-goal halftime lead for the Blue Devils was the largest deficit that Northwestern had faced all year, but would not hold up as the `Cats scored seven of the first eight goals of the second half. Junior midfielders Hannah Nielsen and Meredith Frank combined for five goals and four assists for Northwestern in the second period after being shutout in the first.
