March 21, 2009
Defense Steps Up as No. 2 Women's Lacrosse Downs Boston College, 10-5 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A stingy Maryland defense granted only 12 shots Saturday afternoon as the second-ranked Terps women's lacrosse team upended Boston College, 10-5, in ACC action at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. While the defense created plenty of turmoil for the Eagles, the Maryland offense registered 33 shots, including 22 in the first half alone. Maryland (8-0, 3-0 ACC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after reigning womenslacrossse.com Offensive Player of the Week Brandi Jones nailed a free position shot and made a nice jab step to shake her defender and tally an unassisted score at the 21-minute mark. Caitlyn McFadden put up the Terps' third score off an 8-meter chance before BC's Kristin Igoe got the Eagles on the board courtesy of a free position goal with 18:31 remaining in the first stanza.
No. 6 Carolina Takes Down No. 4 Georgetown, 12-7 CHAPEL HILL - No. 6 Carolina got four goals from Megan Bosica and three from Jenn Russell as they went on to defeat No. 4 Georgetown 12-7 Saturday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The victory brings the Tar Heel win streak to four games heading into a pair of ACC matches next week. The win also marks the second-straight Saturday in which the Tar Heels (7-2) have knocked off the No.4 ranked team. The Hoyas (5-3) came out strong early, posting a quick three goals that seemed to have them in complete control. Ashby Kaestner scored in the first 19 seconds and followed two minutes later on a Molly Ford assist to put the Tar Heels in a 2-0 hole. Jordy Kirr then converted a free-position attempt to make it 3-0 after a five minute period in which the Tar Heels failed to have a possession in their offensive half. Strong in goal once again for Carolina was Logan Ripley who recorded eight saves on the day to earn her seventh win of the season.

The win moves Princeton to 5-1 on the season, while the Cavaliers fall to 6-3. Senior All-American Ashley McCulloch also tallied three points, on a goal and two assists, while redshirt junior Whit Hagerman and junior Brittany Kalkstein each notched two goals. Junior Kaitlin Duff added two assists. Freshman Annie Taylor and Duff each caused two turnovers for the Cavaliers, while sophomore Liz Downs collected three ground balls. Holly McGarvie led Princeton with three goals and two assists, while winning a game-high four draw controls. Louisville hands Hokies 14-8 loss LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Rookie Jessica Nonn and senior Rachel Culp combined for seven goals, but the Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse team could not overcome the Cardinals’ duo of Bergan Foley and Emily Dashiell as Tech fell to Louisville 14-8 in a non-conference match played on Saturday afternoon at the University of Louisville Lacrosse Stadium. Foley opened the scoring with the first goal of the match under two minutes into the contest and would go on to tally four of Louisville’s first five scores. The Hokies’ Dylan Garner (So., Cornelius, N.C.) knotted the score at one-all on a free position shot and the two teams would trade possessions during the next four minutes until Foley struck again to give Louisville the 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in the first half.
