No. 7 Princeton Upsets No. 3 UVa in Women's Lacrosse Thriller

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Princeton's Tice Burke drive the crease and scored with 1:39 to go in the third sudden victory period to lift the #7 Tigers to the upset win over the #3 Cavaliers 9-8 tonight at University Hall Turf Field. Burke's goal came in the 74th minute of play.

The Cavaliers jumped on top five minutes into the game as Jess Hull (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) scored on a free position at the 25:37 mark. The Tigers tied it up 29 seconds later as Kim Smith scored on a challenge. Burke then assisted on a pair of goals 38 seconds apart as Princeton took a 3-1 lead with 21:54 to go in the first.

The Cavaliers answered with a pair of goals as Jamie Haas (Berwyn, Pa./Marple Newtown) scored at 18:35 and Kelly Allenbach (West Chester, Pa./W. C. Henderson) converted a Mia Mooney (Rosemont, Pa./Shipley) feed at the 16:38 point. Princeton went up again as Jo Deans scored with 11:26 to go in the half.

But the Cavaliers took the lead at halftime as Mills Hook (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) took scored off a Lacey Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) feed with 7:16 to go and Gina Sambus (Garden City, NY/Garden City) converted a free position with 1:42 before halftime.

In the second half, Princeton rattled off three consecutive goals in the first eight minutes of play, including a pair from Smith, to take a 7-5 lead. But the Virginia defense came alive and held the Tigers scoreless the rest of regulation. Meanwhile, Melissa Hayes (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) caused a turnover, scooped up the ground ball, and sprinted the length of the field and scored halfway through the second period to cut the deficit to 7-6. Haas tied the score with 7:13 to go in the half, and Hull gave the Cavaliers the lead with just 6:15 to play in regulation.

Princeton tied the game as Smith scored her fourth goal with just 4:27 to go in the regulation period.

In the mandatory overtimes, UVa won the draw both times but neither team was able to generate a shot.

In the first sudden victory period, Virginia again won the draw and Haas' shot was deflected by Princeton goalie Laura Field. The Hoos got the ball back and Hull was able to get off a shot, but it too was saved by Field.

In the second sudden victory period, Princeton won the draw and managed a shot but it went wide. They got the ball back on a ground ball pickup, but the Cavalier defense forced a turnover and Virginia took the ball to their offensive end where Samm Taylor (Springfield, Va./Robinson) took a shot that was saved by Field.

In the third overtime period, Princeton won the draw where Burke took it to goal line extended and drove the crease for the winning goal with 1:39 to play.

The Cavaliers were led by Amy Fromal (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) who picked up 10 ground balls. Ashley Widger (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) had six caused turnovers while Taylor had five. Francis Segarra (Glen Mills, Pa./Glen Mills) had four saves on the night.

With the loss, Virginia falls to 3-2 overall. They will face #2 Penn State on Sunday, March 21 at 1:00 pm.
