No. 3 Duke Rolls California, 19-7

The third-ranked Duke women's lacrosse team completed a perfect weekend as it rolled past the University of California-Berkeley, 19-7, in the first-ever meeting between the teams Sunday afternoon. The game was a neutral-site non-conference match-up played at the University of Denver's Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

With a 17-8 win Friday night over No. 19 Denver already in the books, the Blue Devils start off 2-0 for the eighth consecutive season.

The Blue Devils saw a very balanced afternoon offensively, as Lindsay Gilbride and Carolyn Davis each netted four goals for the second straight game, while Caroline Cryer and Megan Del Monte scored hat tricks. Freshman Kat Thomas and sophomore Sarah Bullard scored twice and Kim Wenger added one goal.

Cryer chipped in five assists to finish with eight points, while the Blue Devils saw four different players chip in at least four points in the victory.

Johnson Leads No. 6 Maryland Women's Lacrosse Over Richmond, 17-6

Freshman Karri Ellen Johnson scored five goals and the sixth-ranked Maryland women's lacrosse team opened up the 2009 campaign with win, defeating Richmond, 17-6, Sunday afternoon at First Market Stadium.

Maryland struck early in the contest as sophomore Sarah Mollison scored 1:30 into the ball game. Richmond responded a short time later with a free position goal from Mandy Friend to knot the match at 1-1. Johnson scored two of her five goals in her first collegiate contest in the Red and Black at 5:52 and at 9:44 off an assist from Brandi Jones in the center of the circle. Amanda Spinnenweber tallied her first score of 2009 off a nice jab step move at 16:07 to give Maryland a three-goal cushion before Johnson extended the lead to five with a couple more scores off Mollison assists from behind the cage at 17:05 and 17:32.

Tar Heels Top Vanderbilt, 14-13, In Overtime

Kaitlyn Messinger scored the lone goal in overtime to lead No. 9 North Carolina to a 14-13 overtime win over No. 12 Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon in the season opener for both teams ath the VU Lacrosse Complex.

Carolina led 3-1 in the opening minutes of the game before Cara Giordano gave VU its first lead at 4-3 with 12 minutes left in the first period. The Tar Heels then carried an 8-7 advantage into halftime.

Carolina (1-0) charged out of the locker room to start the second period, building a 12-8 lead in the first seven minutes. The Commodores settled down, however, and battled back to pull even at 13-13 off another Giordano goal with five minutes left.
