Chapel Hill, N.C. -
North Carolina women's golf coach Sally Austin announces the signing of two of the nation's top players, Shannon Boyle from Cary, N.C., and Katie Miller from Jeannette, Pa.
"We are excited about having Shannon and Katie join our team," says Austin. "They are both successful junior players. Both have played in the United States Girl's Junior Amateur and bring with them great experience. We are thrilled they are going to be Tar Heels."
Boyle, a senior honor student at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, N.C., participates on the boy's golf team there. Boyle played in the 2001 U.S. Girl's Junior Championship. She has won three tournaments during her junior career - the 2002 Kiawah Island Junior Championship, the 2001 Charles Tilghman Junior Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and the 2001 Greensboro Day School Girl's Invitational. Boyle has posted three top 10 finishes in AJGA events. She fired a three-under-par 69 in the final round of the 2002 Kiawah Island Junior Championship on the Ocean Course.
Miller, a senior honor student at Hempfield Area High School in Greensburg, Pa., participated in the 2001 U.S. Girl's Junior Championship where she qualified for match play. This past fall, she won the 2002 PIAA Championship (Pa. High School Championship) for her third title in that event. She is one of only two female athletes who has won three PIAA Championships in the conference's history. Miller also won the 2001 PGA Junior Qualifier at Norvelt Golf Course and the 2001 IJGT (International Junior Golf Tour) Atlantic City Fall Challenge. She was the runner-up in the 2001 AJGA Club Corp Junior Player's Championship and has carded three additional top five finishes in 2001.
