Two Cavaliers Qualify for U.S. Women's Amateur
July 29, 2005 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Two University of Virginia golfers have qualified for the 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur to be held August 1-7 at the Ansley Golf Club in Roswell, Ga. Sophomore Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Fla.) finished third at the Lakeville, Minn., sectional with a 72. Mielbrecht finished the 2005 season with a career-best tie for 16th at the NCAA National Championship, helping the Cavaliers to a 13th-place showing in their first-ever national tourney appearance. She fired a 296 (+12), including two rounds of a season-low 73. As a true freshman, she averaged 78.00 while playing in all 11 tournaments. Carly Truitt (Marysville, Ohio), who will be a freshman this fall, tied for medalist honors with a 69 at the Cincinnati, Ohio, sectional. Truitt won the 2002 and 2003 Ohio High School State Championship for Marysville High School. A three-time first-team All-Ohio honoree, she is a four-time first-team All-Conference selection. Named the Ohio Capital Conference Player of the Year three times, Truitt also earned Ohio Capital Conference Scholar Athlete accolades four times. Recognized as the Ohio High Magazine's 2003 Woman of the Year in girls' golf, Truitt holds the Marysville school records for nine holes (32) and 18 holes (67).
