Palo Alto, Calif. - 2005 Wake Forest graduate Ashley Hoagland joined fellow American college golfers in defeating the Japanese college golf team in the 2005 Fuji Xerox Collegiate Golf Championship on July 15 held at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif.

The United States claimed a 31-29 victory over the Japan squad, marking the 10th straight victory for the Americans. The U.S. now leads the all-time series, 22-8.

With the United States trailing 25-27, Hoagland defeated Miyako Tanaka in the final round and earned two points for the victory, pulling the Americans in a 27-27 tie. Hoagland shot an even par 71 while Tanaka posted a nine-over 80.

The Japanese claimed the first two matches of the day - a pair of 68-71 victories by Ryoma Iwai and Haruo Fujishima over Henry Liaw and Will Dodson - to take their first lead since the first round. Adam Horton - who posted a round-best 67 for the second time in three days and was named men's MVP - evened the matches with a three-stroke win against Jyunpei Takayama.

Japan took the lead yet again when Yuki Ishikawa beat Dane Burkhart, 68-69, before the U.S. claimed two-straight rounds by Shane Prante and Erik Olson to go ahead, 25-23. The Japanese won the final two men's matches. Yuta Ikeda - the only player to win all three matches in the competition - downed J.J. Killeen, 71-73, and Takamasa Yamamoto beat Travis Bertoni, 69-73.

Team USA won the first two women's matches - victories by Hoagland and Stacy Lewis - to take a 29-27 lead. Japan evened the score with one match remaining with Chika Yamamoto's win over Laura Luethke. Annie Young claimed victory for Team USA when she beat fellow women's MVP Miki Saiki, 70-75, for a 31-29 victory.
