Jim Kubinski Named Assistant Golf Coach At Duke
July 10, 2003 DURHAM, N.C. -- Jim Kubinski has been named an assistant coach for both men's and women's golf at Duke University, announced on Thursday by head coaches Dan Brooks and Rod Myers. Kubinski replaces Jason Widener, who departed the department after three seasons to accept the head men's golf coaching position at UNC Wilmington. "We are very excited to have Jim on board," said Brooks. "We have been able to be around Jim a lot with him working at the Duke Golf Club and I have always found him to be knowledgeable, very motivated, positive and is the kind of person that will go the extra the mile. I couldn't be happier with our selection." Kubinski served as a co-head golf professional at the Duke University Golf Club for the past three years. In this role, the Springfield, Mass., native managed operations for the golf club, chaired the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championship Hotel and Merchandise Committees and served as an assistant tournament director for both the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championship and the Duke Childrens's Charity Classic. Prior to his employment at Duke, Kubinski spent nearly three years as the first assistant professional at The Tournament Players Club (TPC) at River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., where he aided with the operation of the PGA Tour's Canon Greater Hartford Open. He also spent time at the Graymere Country Club in Columbia, Tenn., Green Valley Country Club in Greenville, S.C., and Veteran's Golf Course in Springfield, Mass. A member of the Professional Golf Association (PGA) of America since 1999, Kubinski was nominated in 2002 for Teacher of the Year honors for the Carolinas PGA. He participated in the PGA of America Golf Professional Training Program from 1996-99. Kubinski was a four-year letterman and two-year team captain at Springfield (Mass.) College before graduating in 1993. A two-time All-Northeast 10 selection in 1991 and 1992, he also received the Springfield College Maroon Club Award for academic and athletic achievement in 1992. His playing experience continued on the North Atlantic Tour where he posted a tied for sixth place finish at the Boston Open in 1995, and he currently competes in the Carolinas Section PGA.
Duke's women's team captured NCAA Championships in 1999 and 2002 and has won eight consecutive ACC titles. The men's squad has participated in NCAA Regional play in each of the past four years while making 10 postseason appearances since 1990.
