Lang Wins Medalist Honors At WAPL In Record Fashion
June 24, 2004 WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - Duke's Brittany Lang earned medalist honors on Wednesday in record fashion as the Blue Devil rising sophomore registered a 65 on day two to finish with a 36-hole qualifying record of 135 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links (WAPL). Lang connected on eight birdies Wednesday and beat out Jenna Pearson by two strokes to claim medalist honors at the 6,157-yard, Par 72 Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. She went on a streak where she birdied four in a row from the third hole through the sixth with putts ranging from two to eight feet. The McKinney, Texas product then birdied the 10th hole on a 25-foot putt and the 13th from 30 feet before making a four-footer at the 15th and a seven-footer at the 17th. "It's great," said Lang. "You want to be low. It usually gives you a good draw. I feel good about it because it's what I wanted to do. I hit a lot of shots at the flag and gave myself a lot of birdie opportunities." The reigning National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) National Rookie of the Year, Lang, will now advance on to match play where she will battle Amber Jean Kuss on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Lang's total broke a qualifying record that stood for 10 years. The former record of 137 was shared by Jill McGill (1994), Jenna Daniels (1999) and Jenna Pearson, who tied it barely one hour before Lang finished. Last summer, Lang posted victories at the North and South Women's Amateur and the Women's Western Amateur Championship in back-to-back weeks.
