Bluefield, VA - Virginia sophomore women's golfer Jennie Arseneault shot 74 Monday during the opening round of play at the Women's Western Golf Association's 106th National Amateur Championship. Her score places her 12th in the 144-golfer field after 18 holes of play. The tournament, which runs through Saturday, is being played at Fincastle Country Club.

Following Tuesday's second round of stroke play, the field will be cut to 64 players for the match play portion of the championship.

Arseneault, from Grinnell, Iowa, has already qualified for the 2006 Women's U.S. Open that will take place June 29 to July 2 at the Newport Country Club in Newport, R.I. Arseneault will start her second round at the Western Amateurat 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.
