WEST HARTFORD _ As Liz Janangelo walked off the 12th green after sinking an 18-foot putt for her sixth birdie Wednesday, playing partner Cindy Miller gave her a high-five.

Why do such a thing in the middle of a tournament?

"It's fun to watch such great golf," Miller replied.

Indeed, Janangelo needed no theatrics to win a third consecutive Connecticut Women's Open.

A year ago, Janangelo had to make a 12-foot eagle putt to beat Suzy Whaley by a shot at the Country Club of Waterbury.

Wednesday, Janangelo could have made a 14 on the par-4 18th at Wampanoag Country Club, her home course. Instead, she two-putted for par for a 7-under 66, a record 12-under 134 total and a record 11-stroke victory over pro Pamela Crikelair, who lives in Highland Beach, Fla., but travels in the summer out of her parents' house in Darien.

"I hadn't won since this tournament last year, so it was a nice breakthrough," Janangelo said. "It's hard to back up a low round without another one, so I can take a lot of positives from this."

Janangelo's opening 68 gave her a four-shot lead, which reached double digits when she two-putted the par-5 eighth for a fifth birdie. After the 18-footer at No. 12, she hit a sand wedge to 12 inches at No. 17, then parred the 18th to finish with 13 birdies, 22 pars and one bogey. Her total and margin of victory broke the record 138 and eight-shot win by Whaley in her last of three straight titles in 2002 at Rolling Hills CC in Orange. Whaley was disqualified Wednesday after realizing she signed for a par 4 on the 10th hole and a 75 instead of a 5 and 76 in the first round.

But no one was going to catch Janangelo, who was ranked third in the country in her junior year at Duke but failed to win in 10 starts, including a tie for 34th in the NCAA Division I championship. But a closing 72 helped the Blue Devils win a third national title in seven years May 20, the first with Janangelo on the team, and a visit to sports psychologist Rick Jensen in Florida last week got her in the right frame of mind for best back-to-back rounds of her career.

"I was really focused and chose my spots and didn't have a three-putt, and that really made a difference," Janangelo said. "I just wanted to shoot lower and lower and try to birdie every hole. I just tried to look forward, set personal goals and go for the tournament record.

"I'm never home, so when I have that rare opportunity to be able to play in front of friends and family on my home course, it really means a lot to have everyone come out and win for them."

Janangelo celebrated by driving with her father Wednesday night to Galloway Township, N.J., where she'll play a nine-hole practice round at 6 a.m. today before competing in the ShopRite LPGA Classic on a sponsor's exemption. She then hopes to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open June 14 before making her only other state appearance this year in the CIGNA Chip In For A Cure Futures Classic July 8-10 at Gillette Ridge GC in Bloomfield.

Crikelair will be playing in the Futures Tour event on a high after a closing with 69 gave her a 145 total and her first check since turning pro in October for the filming of The Golf Channel's "Big Break III: Ladies Only" in which she finished second. Crikelair, who was fourth in her only Connecticut State Women's Amateur in 2003 after leading with three holes to go, birdied four of the first seven holes, then survived nerves to become the only player besides Janangelo to break 70.

Crikelair, who has had back problems seven years and didn't start playing golf until 2001, shot seven lower after changing putters from the first round, when she had 38 shots and 38 putts.

"I threw the putter away because I figured I couldn't do any worse," said Crikelair, who had 27 putts Wednesday. "I knew I was hitting the ball the best I can [Tuesday], but it was all matter of bad putts. When I got 4 under after seven holes, I got very uncomfortable, then birdied 10, 11 and 12 to get 5 under and my heart was pounding more than my first tee shot because it was a spot I'd never been in before. But I'm delighted because I was just hoping for a top 20 so I could break even on my entry fee."

Lynn Valentine, a 1998 University of Hartford grad and assistant at the Golf Club of Avon, came up 3 feet short of closing with three straight birdies to tie Crikelair. She had 74_146 to earn $2,500.

"I had no idea where I stood," said Valentine, playing her second event since hand surgery in August. "I'm not confident with my irons right now, but the last few holes [caddie] John [Aylsworth] just lined me up and I went right for the holes. It was a good experience."
