Marta Prieto Earns All-America Honors
May 29, 2001 Winston-Salem, N.C. - Wake Forest golfer Marta Prieto (Sevilla, Spain) was named to the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) 2001 All-America team, as announced by the organization at the conclusion of the NCAA Championships last week. Prieto, a senior, earned second-team accolades. Prieto was Wake Forest's top golfer during the 2000-01 season, leading the Deacons with a 74.7 stroke average. She recorded five top 10 finishes during the season and earned an individual bid to the NCAA Championships, where she finished 35th. Her best finish of the season came at the NCAA Fall Preview, where she finished tied for first with teammate Maria Beautell. Prieto also posted top-10 finishes at the SEC/ACC Challenge (9th), the Bryan National Collegiate (4th), the ACC Championships (3rd) and the NCAA East Regional (7th). Prieto, who was also a three-time All-ACC selection during her career, was one of just three ACC players to earn 2001 All-America honors, as Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn and Candy Hannemann were first-team selections.
