Janangelo, Lang Claim Top NGCA Awards
May 24, 2004 CHICAGO, ILL.-The National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) announced the 2003-04 award winners for the 2003-04 season on Monday with Duke garnering National Player and Freshman of the Year. Sophomore Liz Janangelo was awarded the NGCA Division I Player of the Year after posting a 71.10 stroke average, four tournament victories and 19 rounds of even or under par in 10 tournaments. The West Hartford, Conn., product led the Blue Devils to a school-record 10 victories and a third place finish at the NCAA Championship. Janangelo set new Duke records for lowest 18-hole score (65-tie) and 36-hole score (134), while crushing the single-season record for scoring average. Janangelo becomes the first Duke golfer to be named NGCA National Player of the Year and only the second to be named National Player of the Year. Back in 1983-84, Mary Anne Widman was named the Golf Magazine Collegiate Golfer of the Year after winning six tournaments. Duke freshman Brittany Lang became the second Blue Devils to be named NGCA Division I Softspikes Freshman of the Year, after registering a Duke freshman record 71.67 stroke average. In 11 tournaments, Lang posted three victories, 18 rounds of even or under par and a school-record 54-hole total of 204 at the ACC Championship to capture the individual title. Head Coach Dan Brooks was named NGCA East Region Coach of the Year after leading one of the best teams in NCAA history to a No. 1 national ranking all season long. In 20 years at Duke, Brooks has led Duke to 80 team victories including 49 over the last six years. All five of Duke's golfers earned NGCA All-America honors as Lang, Janangelo and senior Virada Nirapathpongporn were named to the first team, senior Leigh Anne Hardin earned second team and freshman Anna Grzebien was honorable mention. Nirapathpongporn earned first team honors for the fourth straight year, becoming the first Blue Devil in school history to be selected to the first team all four years. A Bangkok, Thailand product, Nirapathpongporn finished off her senior year with a 72.53 stroke average, 16 rounds of even or under par, eight top-10 finishes and a tied for sixth place finish at the NCAA Championship. She concludes her career with 27 top-10 finishes, which tied a school record. Hardin earned second team All-America accolades for the second time in her career after posting a 73.48 stroke average and six top-10 finishes. Grzebien came in as a freshman and provided a huge boost as the Narragansett, R.I., native collected a 73.61 stroke average along with seven top-20 finishes. It marked the second straight year Janangelo was named first team. Janangelo was also awarded the 2003-04 Golfstat Cup as the National Player of the Year, with her scoring average of 71.10. She joins only Jenny Chuasiriporn as the only other Blue Devil to win the Golfstat Cup. Chuasiriporn posted a 72.94 stroke average in 1997-98. Janangelo's 71.10 stroke average is the second best in Golfstat's history behind Lorena Ochoa's 70.13 in 2001-02.
