Women's Golf Drops To 21st Place After Round Two Of NCAA Championships
May 22, 2002 AUBURN, Wash. -- The Wake Forest women's golf team dropped from the top of the pack to the bottom after shooting high 70s and low 80s in round two. The Deacs turn in a 305-team score, seven strokes higher than yesterday to sit in 21st place after the second day. There are still two rounds to be played in the NCAA Championships on Thursday and Friday. Arizona is five-over par to lead the pack, but Duke is only six strokes behind in second place. Individually, Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke and Summer Sirmons of Georgia are tied for first place both shooting seven-under par today. Twentieth-ranked junior Nuria Clau shot three-over par today to drop several spots to a five-way tie for 17th place, from her 10th place standing yesterday. Clau has shot seven birdies in both the first two rounds. "I hit in the water on 15 and 17, so that's it. I was playing pretty well the whole round until the end," said Clau. "I like the front nine better, so I'd rather start on the back first. These last holes with the water put a lot of pressure on me especially at the end, because if you know that you still have nine holes to come back. Even if you have a little mistake, you still have time to recover." Junior Maria Beautell shot an improved second round score of 73 to sit in a 12-way tie for 29th place, four-over par for the tournament. Beautell improved from a tie for 43rd place after the first round. She has shot 30 even par holes in the two rounds to sit in second place in this category among the 126 individuals. Freshman Ashley Hoagland turned out a 79 for a two-day score of 155 to put her in a nine-way tie for 94th place. Sophomore Deborah Means fell to a tie for 105th place, after shooting an 81 on the day and senior Katie Brenny is in a tie for 112th place despite shooting three strokes better than her round one score. The Deacs will tee off at 8 a.m. PT on the 10th tee tomorrow morning with Michigan State and Oklahoma State at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash.
