Duke Dominates All-ACC Women's Golf Squad
May 5, 1999 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Top-ranked Duke dominates the 1999 All-ACC women's golf team, boasting four of the six selections -- Beth Bauer (Cramerton, N.C.), Jenny Chuasiriporn (Timonium, Md.), Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn). UNC's Marcy Newton (High Point, N.C.) and Wake Forest's Marta Prieto (Sevilla, Spain) join the quartet of Blue Devils on the all-conference squad. Chuasiriporn and Bauer were selected as Co-Players of the Year while Bauer was named ACC Rookie of the Year. Duke's head coach Dan Brooks was named Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. Newton made her second appearance on the squad as she was named to the 1997 All-ACC team as well as being the ACC Rookie of the Year in '97. Newton captured the individual championship of the Fripp Island Intercollegiate earlier this spring posting a 218 total. She has been the runner-up in two tournaments this year and has posted six top 10 finishes and eight top 20 finishes. In addition to her championship at Fripp Island this spring, she was also the individual medalist of the '97 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Classic. This also marks the second consecutive year that Prieto has been so honored; she was named All-ACC and the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1998 after winning the conference tournament as a freshman. Prieto has started every tournament for the Demon Deacons in 1998-99, leading the team with a 75.6 stroke average and three top 10 finishes. Her best outing of the year came at the 1999 ACC Golf Championships, where as defending champion she finished with a career-best round of 70 to place fourth overall. She also earned a sixth-place finish at the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate in November and a ninth-place finish at the Bryan National Collegiate in April. In addition, Prieto was
on track to collect her second career tournament title at the Caso de Campo
Intercollegiate in March, leading the field after two rounds of before
having to withdraw due to heat exhaustion.
