![]() Blumenherst Named Golfweek Player of the Week
April 22, 2008
DURHAM, N.C. - Coming off claiming ACC Individual Champion accolades for the third straight year, Duke junior Amanda Blumenherst was named Golfweek Player of the Week on Tuesday. Blumenherst, who is a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., became the first three-time ACC Champion in women's golf, while also winning her 11th career tournament at Duke on Sunday. The two-time reigning National Player of the Year also registered the tournament-clinching par putt for Duke as the Blue Devils won their 13th straight ACC Championship at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. Over the weekend, Blumenherst carded rounds of 73, 68 and 71 to finish with a total of 212, which was four-under-par. She didn't play her best round of golf in Sunday's final round but managed to scramble for seven up-and-downs and had 26 putts. It seemed like she would not win the individual title after suffering a double-bogey on the par-four 13th hole, but Blumenherst came back and chipped in for eagle on the par-five No. 14. She closed with an up-and-down on No. 15, missed a birdie putt on the 16th and got up and down on No. 17 and No. 18. Since arriving at Duke, Blumenherst has guided the Blue Devils to two NCAA Championships, three ACC titles, 11 individual tournament wins, 18 team wins, a school-record 61 rounds of even or under par and 27 top 10 finishes, which ranks second on Duke's career list. She has also been selected first team All-America the last two years and has been the consensus National Player of the Year. In 2007-08, Blumenherst is currently the top-ranked golfer in Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, while boasting a 70.67 stroke average, nine top-five finishes in nine tournaments and of the 27 rounds played all have been counted by the Blue Devils. For the second straight year, Blumenherst has won four tournaments with the regionals and national championships still remaining.
