Duke Wins Lady Tar Heel Invitational
September 28, 1998 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke University, the top-ranked team in the country, played up to its #1 ranking as the Blue Devils captured the team title at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational firing a 10-under-par 854 total after rounds of 290-281-283. North Carolina was the runner-up after firing a two-under 286 in the final round to finish with an 890 total. South Carolina finished third with a 902 total, 12 shots behind the Tar Heels. UNC Greensboro tallied a fourth-place finish at 911 while South Florida finished fifth at 913 and Memphis finished sixth at 914. Candy Hannemann of Duke captured the individual title with a four-under 212 total after rounds of 72-67-73. Kelly Lagedrost of South Florida finished one shot back in second place with a 213 total. A trio of players were tied for third place -- Duke's Jenny Chuasiriporn and Beth Bauer and Tennessee's Jessica Lindbergh. Carolina freshman Heather Angell fired a five-under 67 in the final round, the low round of the day, to finish in ninth place with a 220 total. Teammate Shelley McKevitt finished one stroke back at 221 in a tie for 10th place. Marcy Newton tied for 14th with a 223 total while Cuyler Buckles tied for 27th at 232 and Kim Smith tied for 50th at 240.
