Carolina Golfers Tie For Sixth At Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a 15-over-par 303 in the final round of the Cougar Classic to finish with an 889 total to tie for sixth place. Notre Dame topped the field of 20 teams with a six-over 870 total after firing a 291 on the last day. Lauren Hunt and Ann Laney led the Carolina contingent in the final round as each carded two-over 74s. Hunt, a junior from Little River, S.C., tied for 20th place at four-over 220 while Laney, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., tied for 42nd with a 225 total. Sophomore Kate Thomas, from Murwillumbah, Australia,tied for 22nd place after shooting a four-over 76 on Tuesday. Junior Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., tallied a 227 total to tie for 48th place while senior Colette Lowe, from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., finished with a 230 total to tie for 60th. Lisa Maunu of Notre Dame edged out teammate So-Hyun Park to take home the individual title. Maunu fired a two-under 70 in the final round to finish with a six-under 210 total. Park finished just three strokes back in second place at 213 after carding a two-over 74 in the final round. Marci Turner of Tennessee finished third with a two-under 214 total while a trio of players tied for fourth place at 215 - Mississippi's Dori Carter, Tennessee's Angela Oh and South Carolina's Benedicte Toumpsin. Texas and Alabama tied for third place in the team race with 875 totals. Louisiana State finished fifth at 883 and South Carolina tied for sixth place at 889 with the Tar Heels. Florida State finished eighth at 890, NC State finished ninth at 892 and Furman 10th with an 893 total.
